wser, and this is my soul mate Tapanga. We have been together forever and are looking for a forever family to call our own. Tapanga and I are what you would call mellow happy pugs. We like to mosey around the yard, we LOVE to be petted, and we are just the friendliest pair ever. We can use the stairs and the doggie door, and we know to go potty outside. We love males, females, older kids, mellow dogs of all sizes, and cats. Don’t let our age fool you. We are quite spunky and love to go for walks. Our hearing has decided to fail us in our senior years, but we will never be far enough away from you for that to be a problem. The daily eye drops and joint supplement are inexpensive and easy to give. We don’t mind at all. We would love to be your forever pugs. Please put Tapanga and Bowser on your application if you are looking for a happy mellow loving pug couple.

What a handsome guy! Wilber is a 3 year old “Chug” (pug/chihuahua mix) and full of love and spunk. He didn’t come from the best environment but is hoping to find a forever home that will love him back, play with toys, and be patient as he gets accustomed to his new surroundings. He’s a little shy around men but once he gets to know you, he warms up right away. Wilber loves other dogs, doesn’t chew or scratch and is in excellent health – if you’re looking for a gentle, loving companion, Wilber could be your perfect match!

Hi! My name is Charlotte. I am also a Chug (pug/Chihuahua mix). My owners took me to a shelter because they were moving. I am very sweet and will follow my person around like a shadow. I give kisses and love to be in your lap. New people have to go slow with me, but I do warm up, and I bond really fast. I need an owner with a firm but fair hand. See, I can become very protective of my human and sometimes have an attitude with some of the other dogs in my foster mom’s house. I think cats are okay, but if they run from me, then the chase is on. A home without cats would be best, and I’m also really not fond of big dogs.

Hot Weather Alert!
Pugs are sensitive to heat and humidity, and because of this it is important to be aware of the conditions outside, and how long your Pug is outside. Temperatures above 80-85° can be hazardous to your Pugs health and have been known to cause heat stroke, which is potentially deadly.
In addition to something immediate such as heat stroke, it’s also possible that over- exposure to high temperatures can cause long term damage to your Pugs organs including the heart, kidney and liver. It’s not at all uncommon for Pug owners to find their Pugs enjoy laying outside, but please remember that your Pug really doesn’t know any better and it’s up to you to be careful.
A good rule to follow is to keep an eye on the temperature outside during the warm weather months and make sure that your Pug doesn’t stay outside for more than 10-15 minutes at a time. Now, your Pug may be outside for 15 minutes in temperatures around 80° and seem absolutely fine, and if this is the case, you may be tempted to leave him outside a little while longer…Don’t! Heatstroke can come on quickly, in a matter of seconds, and it could cost your Pug his life.
If your Pug does appear to be overheating, which can be indicated by a heavy and persistent panting, you should feed her cold water and cool her off with towels watered down with cool water, or a cold water bath. But the best treatment for a Pug’s vulnerability to hot weather related problems is preventative…Be aware of the temperature, be vigilant about keeping your Pug inside and air-conditioned and don’t take any chances.
Remember, it is up to you to protect your Pug from overexposure to hot weather…they can’t protect themselves!

Animal Welfare Legislation Update
USDA Proposes to Close Loophole on Retail Pet Sales to Ensure Health and Humane Treatment
WASHINGTON, May 10, 2012–The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is proposing to revise its definition of “retail pet store” to close a loophole that has threatened the health and humane treatment of pets sold sight unseen over the Internet and via phone- and mail-based businesses. Under the current definition of “retail pet store,” which was developed over 40 years ago and predates the Internet, some breeders selling pets are taking advantage of a loophole that improperly exempts them from the basic requirements of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).
Colorado Pug Rescue supports the parts of the proposed legislation that attempts to close the loophole on retail pet sales. However, other parts of the proposed rule would inhibit our ability to place foster pugs should the adopter be out of state and unable to physically come to the foster home in Colorado. We would prefer that the USDA amend the proposed rule to exclude rescues and shelters and not lump them in with retail pet stores and breeders who sell their animals over the internet.
